Updated Living Room

Location: Telford, PA

Project Overview:

My client’s living room was stuck in the 90s with forest green carpeting, floral and striped wallpaper in burgundy and forest green, and swags with a matching floral pattern. A wood-burning fireplace covered in brick with a matching ceramic tile hearth occupied one wall while a large Amish-crafted oak wall entertainment unit occupied the only other wall in the room.

Updated Living Room

Challenges

  • Incorporate the current loveseat and sofa into the room design.
  • Ensure a way to display all the family photos that would be displaced when the large wall unit was removed.
  • Reduce the glare from the bay window.
  • Maintain some of the home’s original elements.

My client was excited about the idea of a transitional style room with a casual yet elegant look and feel where everyone would feel comfortable. A soft and serene palette was desired to ensure a mood of relaxed refinement. We started with area rugs as our inspiration and found a beautiful tranquil blue, gray and cream transitional rug with an oversized graphic design. My client loved it, and it quickly became the perfect springboard for the room.

Solutions

  • The fireplace is the focal point with stacked stone in cool gray tones and a natural bluestone hearth.
  • A media console combining traditional design details with a contemporary gray finish provides the base for the new larger flat screen television.
  • Crisp white floating shelves staggered on each side of the television display the family photos.
  • New crown molding and all window frames and baseboards painted white dove add a radiant touch.
  • A lift top cocktail table in a caramel natural finish with black metal accents adds to the warm, natural elements of the fireplace.
  • An oversized tight back lounge chair and ottoman in a tone-on-tone beige fabric enhances the relaxed yet refined feel of the room.
  • Oil-rubbed bronze table lamps with beige linen shades complement the other elements in the room.
  • Horizontal sheer shades were added to the bay window to allow for natural lighting as well as energy efficiency while reducing glare.
  • Top treatments in an embroidered linen blend with a classic scroll design complete the casually elegant look and feel of the room.
