Updated Dining Room
How a tired, cramped dining room became a light, airy space for guests to enjoy.
Challenges
- Host large dinner parties without feeling crowded
- Provide adequate lighting whether for dining or playing card games
- Reduce the glare from the bay window
- Scale the rug for the room and furniture configuration
- Maintain some of the home’s original elements
My client was excited about the idea of a transitional style room with a casual yet elegant look and feel, where everyone would feel welcome. A soft and serene palette was desired to ensure a mood of relaxed refinement. We started with area rugs as our inspiration and found a beautiful tranquil blue, gray and cream transitional rug with an oversized graphic design. My client loved it, and it quickly became the perfect springboard for the room.
Solutions
- A narrower, custom table in a weathered gray finish allowed for easier movement in the room.
- A kitchen table with the same depth as the dining table was selected so it can be added to accommodate larger dinner parties.
- Crown molding and shadow boxes were added and painted White Dove for an added radiant touch.
- A six-staggered pendant light fixture was selected, and put on a dimmer switch, so lighting is always perfect whether hosting dinner guests or a game night.
- A larger area rug was selected that protects the beautiful new walnut hardwood floors when chairs are pulled away from the table.
- Horizontal sheer shades were added to the bay window to allow for natural lighting, as well as energy efficiency while reducing glare.
- Top treatments, in an embroidered linen, blend with a classic scroll design to complete the casually elegant look and feel of the room.
