Apex, North Carolina

Apex is a small city in Wake County, North Carolina, about 12 miles southwest of Raleigh. It is 19 square miles of land bordering, and is 11 miles south of Research Triangle Park. Eight miles to the west is Jordan Lake. Apex encompasses the community of Friendship at its southern border. In 1994, the downtown area was designated a Historic District. Several buildings date to the late 1800’s. It is an example of an intact turn-of-the-century railroad town. The Apex train depot, built in 1867, is designated a Wake County landmark. The depot location marks the highest point on the old Chatham Railroad, hence the town’s name. The town motto is “The Peak of Good Living”. Read about some interesting Apex resources:

Celebrating the Peak of Good Living in Apex, NC

Salem Street in historic downtown Apex will come alive during PeakFest! For more than thirty years, PeakFest has brought families together for a day of fun, food and fellowship. The event, which is referred to as an arts and crafts festival, has deep roots within the Apex community. What started as a small community day in a school parking lot has grown into an event that draws hundreds of vendors and over 22,000 people to the streets of downtown Apex. Every year, the Apex Festival Commission plans a bigger and more exciting day.

There are five fire stations located in Apex. Fire personnel are assigned to 1 of 3 shifts that work 24-hour rotations. Each shift has up to 17 full-time fire personnel, as well as part-time firefighters who work Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, excluding holidays.

Whether paid or volunteer, our highly qualified, professional personnel are trained in a wide variety of fire, rescue, and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) specialties.

In addition to the usual fire suppression response duties, the Fire Department also responds to a number of other emergency calls. The department currently maintains personnel on each shift certified in the following specialty areas:

  • Confined Space Rescue
  • Hazardous Materials/Radiological Response
  • High Angle Rescue
  • Structural Collapse Rescue
  • Trench Rescue
  • Underwater Rescue/Recovery
  • Vehicle Extrication

All full-time members of the Fire Department are certified to the Emergency Medical Technician level. The Fire Department responds with EMS on all life-threatening emergencies.
